Artist Biography

Benita Brewer is a visual artist residing outside Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in northern Indiana, earned a BFA from Indiana University and MFA from University of Cincinnati. After several years of working as a graphic designer and photographer, she became an Assistant Professor at Purdue University - Fort Wayne and taught visual and multi-media design. Since 2010, Benita has been a full-time artist, specializing in water-color and acrylic painting. She is the former Executive Director of the Illinois Watercolor Society, former Membership Chair for the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and a signature member of the National Watercolor Society.


Benita was awarded an Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artists' Grant and a Purdue University Faculty Research grant. While living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she participated in the Creative Capital Development Program co-sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. She was also a member of the  state-sponsored Oklahoma Arts Leadership program which focused on developing projects that assist with community revitalization, education, and overall quality of life through art. Over the years, Benita’s work has been exhibited nationally.
